Charlap Hyman & Herrero participated in Built In at the Neutra VDL House, a group exhibition of site-specific works from 32 LA-based creative practices, with each work responding to the various architectural and programmatic nuances intrinsic to the residence.
CHH designed a functioning water fountain featuring a large seashell, which sits atop a stainless steel cylindrical form — an homage to Richard Neutra's "floating" piano downstairs, with its wooden legs having been replaced with three reflective chrome cylinders that almost disappear from view. Situating the piece on the second floor terrace, CHH sought to restore the sonic experience as one faces across Silver Lake Boulevard to a time when the emphasis would have been on the lake, just beyond, by muffling the sounds of traffic with moving water. The shell hovers above Neutra's shallow pool on its chrome pedestal as it spills water, a memory of a distant grotto.
Built In was curated by Los Angeles gallery Marta and Erik Benjamins.
