Charlap Hyman & Herrero designed two adjoining terraces for the offices of Monique Péan in SoHo. Inspired by the aesthetic and material language she has developed in her refined jewelry, CHH created a series of meandering outdoor spaces with different functions for meetings, entertaining and relaxing. Working with botanist Mackenzie Younger, the firm had the terraces planted in monochrome, with native grasses, flowers and trees in natural shades of black. As the architectural elements of the spaces are rendered in blackened wood and stone, the effect is totalizing, punctuated by several concrete furnishings. Recalling the black garden in Joris-Karl Huysmans' À Rebours, this New York rooftop is a study in the subtleties of texture and form.
