The inaugural installation at FREE, an exhibition space conceived of by the Venetian studio YALI on San Marco, is the result of the collaboration between YALI and CHH. Seen from the street, passers-by will encounter a graphic landscape of surreal proportions where works in glass, metal and wood by YALI, and works in paper and plastic by CHH, appear adrift in a limitless bath of red felt. Inside, the compression of the vitrine is relieved by an atmospheric frieze and ceiling of clouds and arrows - clad in a wallpaper by CHH - which complete the microcosm. Tables like lakes, chairs like mountains, wall-mounted clothing hooks like cat’s eyes, an over-scaled shell, illuminated on the floor, dot this miniature universe, where the relationship between the natural state of materials and their hand-wrought forms is as slippery as the boundaries of the space are legible.
This is the second time YALI and CHH have worked together to realize a spatial project, the first being Design is Dead in New York in 2019, in collaboration with Chiarastella Cattana and Giorgio Mastinu.
