For Stephen Sondheim’s 1973 A Little Night Music, staged at the Nederlandse Reisopera and directed by Zack Winokur, Charlap Hyman & Herrero created two distinct worlds composed of constantly shifting formal elements. In the first, a net of hinged walls and doors fold and unfold to delineate different spaces within the narrative and demonstrate the passage of time. In the second, a cubistic composition of blocks is assembled and dispersed to the same effect. Costumes by Cynthia Talmadge - textural explorations richly rendered in monochrome - correlate with the palettes of each act's stage set.
