Charlap Hyman & Herrero designed and fabricated three architectural models as their submission to the 2017 Chicago Architecture Biennial. The models depict the grand salon of Yves Saint Laurent’s and Pierre Bergé’s Rue de Babylone apartment in a state of flux, with each model featuring a different time of day – the day on which the room’s contents were packed and removed. Not a single part of the Rue de Babylone collection was sold at auction until Saint Laurent’s passing, and in one day the apartment’s salon transformed from the Proustian ensemble of art and design amassed by its owners over decades into a vacant, Haussmann-era room. CHH’s models featured re-scaled pieces of Saint Laurent’s collection rendered in cardboard and watercolor, and recreated a moment in the life of a room and its ephemeral contents.
